The Benefits of Dry Brushing

Dry brushing seems to be everywhere at the moment, what is actually a century old beauty ritual has gained a healthy following in recent years thanks to advocates of the process like Miranda Kerr and Gwyneth Paltrow.

So what exactly is dry brushing?

Well, its exactly what it sounds like. The use of a natural and not too firm brush to promote stimulation and invigorate the skin. The process is relaxing and sometimes meditative and easy to add to every day life.

Brushing the skin regularly helps stimulate the normal lymph flow within the body and helps the body detoxify itself naturally. Dry brushing is also a super exfoliant, it helps shed dead skin cells resulting in smoother, brighter and more radiant skin.

The process also cleans out and reduces pores. Some people even swear it reduces cellulite and helps with sun damage.

How to dry brush

Its always best to use a good quality, naturally-made brush like our Andrée Jardin body or bath brushes. Some might recommend brushing at night just before bed, but we actually recommend dry brushing in the morning as it promotes energy.

You only need to spend approx 3-5 mins on the ritual and depending on the sensitivity of your skin, do it daily or 2-3 times a week. You can add body oil to the brush but shower beforehand so that it becomes part of your moisturising ritual otherwise dry brush after your shower and then apply a body oil or lotion.

Its best to start at your feet and brush upwards in firm, small strokes and do the same with the arms. Brush in a circular motion on your torso and face (with a softer brush on the face).

Its important to not press too hard, it should be soft enough to not show any scratches or marks but firm enough to promote exfoliation.

Dry brushing should be an easy, relaxing addition to anyone's current morning ritual and if it helps us look more like Miranda Kerr- then that's an added bonus!
